4.1 What is OS (operating System)?
Operating System is a very important program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software.
4.2 Examples of computer operating systems
· Apple MacOS - Apple computer operating system. The only Apple computer operating system.
· Ubuntu Linux - A popular variant of Linux used with PC and IBM compatible computers.
· Google Android - operating system used with Android compatible phones.
· iOS - Operating system used with the Apple iPhone.
4.3 What is System Software?
computer software or an operating system designed to operate and control the computer hardware and to provide a platform for running application software.
System software is a program that manages and supports the computer resources and operations of a computer system while it executes various tasks. Such as processing data/information, controlling hardware components and allowing users to use application software.
Systems software functions as a bridge between computer system hardware and the application software Moreover, System software is made up of many control programs, including the operating system, communications software and database manager.

4.5 Configure network setting to DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)?
Windows 7
To set your network card for DHCP, follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Network and Internet
4. Click View network status and tasks under Network and Sharing Center
5. Click Change adapter settings on the left navigation bar

8. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
9. Click Properties
10. In the General tab, ensure that Obtain an IP address automatically radio button is selected
Note: Prior to making this change, right down the IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway information as it will be lost if Obtain an IP address automatically is selection so you may change the network information at a later time.
11. Click OK twice and exit back to the Desktop
4.5 What is a Device Driver?
- A device driver is a program that controls a particular type of device that is attached to your computer.
- It is a software program that decides how a computer will communicate with hardware devices (external devices). This scans the computer for missing, corrupt and outdated Device driver errors and automatically repairs them. The driver functions contain the device-specific code needed to carry out actions on the device (I/O services).
4.6 What are partitions?
Is a section of the storage area of hard disk created to separate different operating systems and it’s identified by a letter
4.7 What is a File system?
A file system is a way of organizing information on a storage device.
Some popular disk file systems: FAT (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT), NTFS, HFS andHFS+, HPFS, EXT2, EXT3, ISO 9660, ODS-5, and UDF.
4.8 Pre-installation steps:
- Decide whether the installation will be an upgrade or clean install and which version of windows is to be loaded
- Determine the file system which will be used.
- Decide whether the computer will have more than one operating system installed
- Scan for viruses
- Determine if the hardware is compatible
- Obtain any drivers. upgrades, or hardware replacements
- Decide if the software applications are compatible
- Obtain any patches. upgrades. or software replacements
- Delete any unwanted files and uninstall any unwanted applications
- Back up any data files necessary
- Remove any power management or disk management tools
4.9 Post Installation:
- Setup internet connection by going to : Start > All Programs > Accessories > Connection > Network Setup Wizard or New Connection Wizard
- Install Antivirus and update it.
- Install application that you will use them always such as; Microsoft Office, PDF Reader, and Media Player.
- Customize Explorer (Configure your Browser). :
· Change default home page to http://www.google.com
· Change history and privacy settings
- Create a system recovery disc (CD) using the recovery disk option.
- (Partition) divides the hard drive into parts and makes them available to different operating system.
